A Canadian online pharmacy has been selling the little blue pill, the first drug in a new category of drugs to treat erectile dysfunction, for more than two years.
In a video posted by Health Canada last week, a Canadian online pharmacy, Teva Pharmaceuticals Canada, said the first drug in a new category of drugs to treat erectile dysfunction, Sildenafil, is coming soon to offer more cost-effective options.
“We are launching this product in the second half of 2017,” the Canadian pharmacist said. “It’s been in the market since 2007 and it’s a first-class product.”
The drug is a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (PDE-5i), which works by dilating blood vessels in the penis, causing an erection to occur. It's also known as Viagra.
“It’s available in Canada and in the U. S.,” Teva Canada CEO Paul Bechtel said in the video. “It’s an innovative and affordable way of doing things. We’re excited to work with a lot of industry people to create a safe and effective product for this very common condition, which is the cause of sexual dysfunction, erectile dysfunction and impotence.”
The drug is currently available as a tablet in the U. S., Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia and in the U. K. The company hopes to introduce the product to the U. S. market in Q2 2016.
“I think we can make a lot of positive strides,” said Bechtel, who has had a patient in his home province of British Columbia for many years.
“It is good to have a company with that expertise to help.”
The company also said it’s working with pharmaceutical companies to develop a treatment for erectile dysfunction, including Sildenafil and Vardenafil, which are drugs that treat erectile dysfunction.
“We’re working on the idea that we’re going to be able to offer more affordable and innovative treatments,” said Bechtel.
“The first thing we’re working on is the marketing of this new product,” he added.
Vardenafil is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor used to treat male sexual dysfunction. It is also effective in treating pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), high blood pressure in the lungs, and high blood pressure in the heart, among others.
“I think it’s going to be a lot more affordable,” he said. “We’re talking about a lot of the drugs, and we’re working on them.”
The drug is available in Canadian pharmacies, including Teva, for about $25 per pill.
